Some of you may remember me talking about our latest big home design project Justin and I started back in 2020. We’ve been converting a detached shed, previously used for my home office and gym, into an ADU. Without changing the roof line we were able to create a comfortable, livable space. While I miss having a separate space for working out and a dedicated work area the potential of this tiny home is huge.
I thought I would give you a little home tour along with a few photos we snapped throughout the process. It’s definitely been the biggest labor of love we have tackled together and we definitely couldn’t have done it without some help. But, I couldn’t be happier with the end result. We stayed close to our original projected budget but went a little over due to some things we didn’t quite plan for…isn’t that how all construction projects go though?!
One thing to think about when designing a tiny home/ADU is the size of your appliances. Turns out that any non-standard size (even smaller) is going to cost you more. I was shocked at the price difference between a 24″ gas range and a standard 30″. When it came to an over the range microwave our options were super limited and the prices were so inflated but I have to say that I love the microwave we went with. I just hope we can update the appliances in our house someday soon and that they will look just as nice as these! I have a little bit of appliance envy.
We went with Ikea cabinets for the kitchen and bathroom but had to build a few ourselves to fit our specific dimensions/needs. I purchased all the of the hardware from either Walmart or Home Depot. The faux plants were a last minute touch to put in the place before renting it out. We also built the custom dresser and clothes rack to fit the space underneath the loft bed. We found the library style ladder hardware on Amazon and Justin built the ladder off of the specs found if you purchased the full kit.
Let me know if you have any questions about the process or if there is a specific product used in our project that you’d like more info on. I’d also love to know what you think about how this tiny space turned out. Let me know in the comments!
