Fall very well could be my favorite season to decorate, or at least equal to my love for decorating for Christmas. Each year I build on my decor and ideas for decorating each season. And I feel like this year I’ve finally got the perfect fall porch. There were a few elements that were missing last year and this year I’ve pulled them all together for the perfect fall porch. So I wanted to share the 6 elements you need in order to create the perfect fall porch.
How to Create the Perfect Fall Porch
1. Cornhusks – You can usually buy them at your local pumpkin patch in bundles. The ones I go were so tall I had to chop off about 3′ from the bottom. They’re still towering on our front porch but add such a statement right when you drive up. If you have a two story home or taller ceilings on your porch you can bundle them up and lean them against the house siding or do what I did and tie them to the post.
2. Hay bales – Another element we didn’t have last year. Hay bales are a great way to add height to your fall porch decor. You can also stack pumpkins or plants on them. I opted for two smaller hay bales that I purchased from Home Depot as opposed to the large ones you can buy at your local pumpkin patch. I’d say buy the size that best fits on your front porch. If we had more room I definitely would have chosen larger hay bales. But the effect and texture it adds to your porch is so nice.
3. Mumms – I replaced the plants I had potted in my raised planters to mumms for fall. I am hoping they will get bigger as we get farther into the season but the color is perfect and a nice contrast to all the pumpkins.
4. Fall Wreath – This year I decided to make my own fall wreath. I bought all the supplies at my local craft store and put it together just they way I wanted. I’ll be honest, it’s not the cheaper route to go as you can buy pre-made wreaths for much less than what I ended up spending but I love that it looks exactly the way I wanted it to.
5. Layered doormats – I purchased my layered doormats last year for the different seasons and love the large buffalo check mat under my Home Sweet Home doormat. It’s a nice touch to layer your doormats for each season. I have a fun palm leaf one for spring/summer and the check one is for fall. This winter I am going to purchase a more festive one.
6. Pumpkins – You can’t have a fall porch without pumpkins, lots and lots of pumpkins. This is my absolute favorite part and of course will look completely different for everyone. I love to have my pumpkins go up the steps and onto our porch. We also tend to fall in love with the funky more unique pumpkins. Last year it was all white and green pumpkins but this year we did green and orange. I love mixing sizes and styles of pumpkins as well as mix in some gourds. We visit the pumpkin patches often and bring a few pumpkins back each time so this will continue to grow and take shape as we add more and more pumpkins into the mix!
