Ocean Kayaking was one activity I was really looking forward to doing this trip. Last time we were in Oahu, Mason was just about to be turning 3. He was much smaller and when I researched kayaking most places wouldn’t allow us to take him Kayaking. He’s since had a few major growth spurts and is a year older and thankfully Twogood Kayaks was ok with him sitting in the middle of a tandem kayak. I had hoped to rent a crystal kayak which is entirely clear but when we got to Twogood Kayaks they let me know that the crystal clear kayaks had been giving them issues and so they only had clear bottom kayaks available to rent. I still figured that would be better than a normal kayak so Mason could look down and check out the sea life while Justin and I paddled.
Getting the kayak out to the ocean was a team effort. Mason definitely wasn’t helping to carry the kayak but we needed his cooperation to stay by us and listen us. He wasn’t necessarily excited to get into the kayak at first. Mason was actually a little scared especially with the small waves coming into the shore. We had to plop him in the middle of the Kayak and then push it out farther where the water was calmer before Justin and I got in. In all honesty, there was a bit of complaining coming from him during our paddle out as he got adjusted to the kayak. And he didn’t like the little bit of water from our paddles that dropped on him.
We rented the kayak for a half day and kayaked out to flat island as well as around Kailua looking for sea turtles. I would highly recommend doing ocean kayaking on Oahu. It was a lot of fun and a great family friendly activity. Expect a little uncertainty from your kids especially their first time but after a while on the water, searching for sea turtles and other sea life Mason really enjoyed himself. Justin and I got a great arm workout while also having a lot of fun doing this as a family.
Definitely confirm in advanced that the crystal clear kayaks are good to go out in the water before making your reservation, if you want one. While I thought I made it clear I wanted the fully clear kayak I should have double/triple checked. Lesson learned! Regardless, we had an amazing time and would definitely do it again next time we’re visiting Hawaii.
