The other day I got this crazy idea to whitewash our brick walkway. I decided I would try and do this DIY with my 3.5 year old (what was I thinking?!) but we went ahead and did this quick (somewhat) and easy DIY project the same day. We spent the afternoon whitewashing brick and I couldn’t be more pleased with the outcome. Below are the simple steps we took to whitewash our brick walkway and stairs to try and blend the already whitewashed look of of our front porch.
The Steps we took for Whitewashing Brick:
Step 1: Clean the brick. I just used our hose and hose nozzle to “power wash the surface.
Step 2: Mix 50/50 paint and water. I just used white primer paint that we had leftover from when we updated our pantry room. I figured since we were whitewashing brick that was outside primer would actually last longer.
Step 3: Paint the watery white primer over the brick. Having a toddler help out with this wasn’t the easiest but it did make our whitewashing more irregular which in the end was helpful. I would spread around the paint if he was focusing too much on one area.
Step 4: After you have your base painted spray with your hose to remove some of the paint.
Step 5: After the whitewash dried completely I went back over certain spots to add more paint as well as sanded down other areas to let more of the brick show through. I plan to go back over the brick once more with the sander to let even more of the red brick show through but since I plan on giving myself a break from this project for a little bit I wanted to share this now.
What do you think about the before and after?
As always, thank you so much for stopping by the blog today!
