One way I love switching up my outfits is by wearing a sweater over a dress. It instantly creates a new look with old favorites. I’ve done this on a number of occasions. Last year for our family photos I styled my lace midi dress with a peplum wrap sweater over it. You can check out that outfit here. My lace dress has a defined waist with a fuller skirt so it is important to keep that definition to not end up looking frumpy, hence the reason I paired it with a peplum style sweater. Selecting the right style sweater for your dress that you’re layering it over is one of my tips for wearing a sweater over a dress. You’ll want to pick a peplum sweater to wear with a dress that has a fuller skirt, or a sweater that is more fitted. For a flow dress you can style with a looser sweater as long as you either tuck it into a belt or knot it in the back to pull the extra fabric in.
This floral shift dress has been a favorite of mine for a while and I love finding new ways to wear it. I pulled the marigold yellow from the floral print and layered my oversized marigold lightweight sweater over it. Since this sweater is long and loose, it was important to create some definition at my waist. I buckled a thin belt over my dress and then tucked the front of my sweater in the belt. This cropped the sweater and defined my waist at the same time. Another trick you can use in case you don’t have a thin belt or are worried about creating to much bulk at your waist is to take a hair tie and knot the back of your sweater tucking the loose end up and under. This will create a cropped look that is clean in the front minimizing extra fabric in the front. Those are just a few of my tips for wearing a sweater over a dress.
You can do the same thing with a cropped cardigan, pullover sweater or sweatshirt, or even a t-shirt. Layering any of these over a dress will create a new look. Most people likely won’t even notice it’s with something you have worn before. I can’t tell you how many people complimented me on my skirt when they saw this outfit for the first time. If you’re someone who doesn’t like to wear the same dress too often or doesn’t buy dresses because you’re afraid everyone will notice that you’ve worn it before, this is a great trick to extend the life of your dresses and get lots more wear out of them!
All these pieces I used to create this outfit are either old or no longer available and have been in my closet for a while so I’m going to share some similar options that are available in case you’d like to recreate this look.
