So when did you know it was time to transition your toddler into a toddler bed? Funny story for us, well actually more of a scary story. Mason pretty much told us it was time to transition him into a toddler bed after one scary act. The other day he was fighting his afternoon nap and all of a sudden, there he was opening up his bedroom door looking at us like, “hey! I’m not going to nap today.” So we put him back in his crib, only to have him do the same thing minutes later. We were hoping the third time would be the charm, but wanted to watch him on the baby monitor to see what he was doing. After a little bit, he decided to get out once more but this time instead of his stealth mode he did the first two times, he started his way out only to topple over, land on his head, and somersault over himself.
Justin and I were in literal shock. It looked like he may have tweaked his neck when he hit his head on the mattress and I was so scared he did some major damage. Thankfully he’s completely fine. And I know all the signs to look out for, thanks to a firefighter as a hubby and our amazing family chiropractor. But ya’ll I have never felt so scared in a split second before. After we checked him out and he seemed to be ok Justin immediately went up into our attic to pull down the toddler conversion kit for his crib.
We spent the next little bit transitioning his crib into a bed and if only I could have caught Mason’s reaction to the bed being done. He was jumping for joy, bouncing around in his new toddler bed. Going in and out of it. Practicing sleeping in his new bed and bringing all his baby blankets in with him. It was an incredible sight to see. He couldn’t have been more ready for that extra independence.
Justin ended up going to Home Depot to get new door knobs for his bedroom door so that he wouldn’t be able to open the door in the middle of the night. Before, he could easily open and close his door but now with the round door knob, not so much. We were expecting a very interesting and possibly hard first night in the big boy toddler bed but to our surprise when it was bedtime he was happy to crawl himself into bed.
It’s crazy how fast our baby is growing up and I can’t help but be a little sad. Maybe it’s the wine, maybe it’s just all my mom feelings but I literally have tears coming down my cheek as I’m writing this. I feel like this transition from a crib to a toddler bed is a big one and our baby was clearly ready to be a big boy. For the holidays, we asked for a toddler quilt, sheets and pillow case and I’ve just started using the quilt not that long ago but I think he’s excited for all the new bedding too. I finally ordered his toddler pillow, the afternoon we had “the incident” since I figure it’s about time he finally got one. Now, our baby isn’t a baby anymore but becoming a big boy and has his big boy bed and big boy bedding.
For all you mamas, I’m curious how you decided it was time to transition your toddler into a toddler bed??
