I mentioned a while ago that Mason had requested a safari animal theme for his, soon to be, shared room with his baby brother. I finally started working on updating his room now that I am no longer working the temp job I took on at the beginning of the year. The first thing we did was have his closet updated. My dad actually took this project on by himself doing all the demo and finish work, including painting, while I was still working. My father-in-law helped him assemble the Ikea closet system we purchased. I am so excited with how it turned out and will be sharing it on the blog when we do our full bedroom reveal. But for now, I wanted to focus on the modern wood trim accent wall my dad and I did in two days.
This DIY project makes a major impact in the room and was fairly easy to do. My dad was able to save the the old trim around Mason’s closet so we used that for the trim pieces to create the accent wall. My dad ripped them into 1″ strips. Besides the wood trim pieces we used finish nails, construction adhesive (used on trim where there wasn’t any studs to tie into), spackle, and painters caulk. If you’re interested in the steps we took to complete this project I’m listing them below.
Step-by-Step for our DIY Modern Wood Trim Accent Wall:
1. We used painters tape to tape off the wall.
2. Cut in with our accent wall paint color (Behr, color Scallion) and then with a roller painted the wall.
3. Primed and painted the wood trim pieces.
4. I drew up a plan for how I wanted the trim to be spaced out on the wall.
5. Measured out our studs and marked on a separate sheet of scratch paper so we easily had them available. NOTE: I adjusted the design a little bit due to where the studs were.
6. Started laying out each trim piece, one by one. We started working from left to right with the main, what I would call, anchor trim pieces that fell on or across the studs in the wall and then went back to fill in the rest of the design.
7. Filled in the finish nails with spackle and let dry.
8. Used painters caulk for a seamless finish between the trim pieces and the wall as well as the seams where the trim pieces met up with each other.
9. Touch up paint to cover spackled areas as well as caulk.
As always, thank you so much for stopping by the blog today. I hope you enjoyed this post!
