When Justin and I got our first place together I decided we needed to have vintage Christmas ornaments on our tree. I never had a Christmas tree growing up so I was beyond excited to have one in our home. What drew me to vintage Christmas ornaments initially was a home consignment shop I was obsessed with going into. Right around the holidays they had a Christmas shop inside and there were tons of vintage Christmas ornaments. I quickly became hooked! That first Christmas in San Francisco, I purchased a number of ornaments to get our collection started. That home consignment shop has since closed but I’m so happy that it got me started on my love for a vintage Christmas.
Now I find all my vintage Christmas ornaments on Etsy! You definitely need to hunt but there are some really quality ones. I have since doubled our collection. I also finally bought a tree topper last year. Our faux Christmas tree couldn’t handle the topper we had for our real Christmas trees so I needed to find a super lightweight one and the one I found on Etsy has worked out perfectly.
I am drawn to the Soviet and German vintage ornaments from around the 1950s – 1970s. I search for vintage mercury glass ornaments as well as vintage Christmas ornaments and so many options pop up. Since I have been sticking to a more neutral color palette for our tree I tend to stay away from the more vibrant ornaments but there are so many beautiful ones.
Do you have a theme to your Christmas tree ornaments? I’d love to know how you decorate your tree for the holidays!
