So the title of the post may sound a little silly, but after feeling like I was going stir crazy at home after far too many weeks of shelter in place I decided one morning to elevate the day and make it feel more like a staycation than a lockdown! After having such a great day, it was a total mood booster, I figured I’d share 10 ways to make a day at your house feel like a staycation.
• Play music that reminds you of your recent vacation. The other day while Justin and I were working in our front yard we decided to switch up our playlist. We have outdoor speakers which is nice and just connect our phones with an app to get our Pandora playlists. We listened to tropical reggae music and it brought us back to our last tropical vacation.
• Put on a summer dress or vacation outfit. I went with a dress I wore in Hawaii. Honestly, everyday that I’ve worn something other than loungewear or workout wear has really boosted my mood. I’ve been wearing clothes that I would normally otherwise stick to wearing while on the weekends or on vacation because they feel so easy and breezy and perfect for a day at the beach.
• Bust out your fancy dishes! I decided to use our wedding plates, which we normally only use only on special occasions and when we have guests over for brunch at home. I don’t know why something as simple as elegant flatware, fancy plates, and glasses made such an impact but elevating mealtime made the day feel a little bit more special.
• Dine al Fresco! Take those fancy dishes and enjoy your meal outdoors. We have an outdoor dining area that while I love it doesn’t get used as often as it should. Mainly just when we have parties. But, after enjoying my morning coffee in the sun I figured I should enjoy brunch outdoors too.
• Pour yourself a mimosa. Day drinking has somewhat become the new norm during quarantine, am I right mamas?! But, I for one don’t switch from drinking water and coffee till after 4pm (at the earliest). So the other day when I enjoyed a small mimosa with my brunch in our backyard, it felt like a mini vacation. I didn’t have much, just a small champagne flute, but that’s what I would do if I was on vacation so do as the vacationers do and enjoy a glass in the afternoon.
• Go for a leisurely walk. The days I get outside and go for a leisurely walk make me feel so much better. I’ve continued to do my at home workouts on my Peloton and taking Peloton digital classes which of course also boosts my mood, but the fresh air is really nice. And going on a walk just because and not for my physical activity of the day has been really beneficial. Usually during our vacations we are walking around a lot more than we are driving so getting that added exercise, out in the sun, makes it feel more like a staycation then a regular day at home.
• Get your tan on. You can either lay out in the sun, do work in your yard, or if you’re not big on sun exposure use some self tanner to achieve that sun kissed vacation glow. I can’t tell you how much happier I’ve been since I started using self tanner. I just feel so much better when I’m tan! My pale skin was really bringing my mood down and so now that I’ve got a weekly self tanning routine, I not only look better but feel better too. PS I switched up my self tanner and started using these drops and really love the dark natural tan it gives me.
• Order delivery or get take out from your favorite local restaurant. Help support your local restaurants that are struggling right now due to COVID-19 by ordering delivery or take out and spare yourself cooking a meal. It will feel a lot more like a luxury these days since we’ve all been stuck at home for so long. If they’re delivering drinks as well, like one of our local Mexican restaurants has margaritas you can get to-go with your dinner order, order those to make your staycation at home experience as little more of a staycation vibe.
• Treat yourself to a little at home pampering. One thing I always look forward to when on vacation is treating myself to some sort of spa treatment. Either a facial or massage. Being able to relax by the pool or soak in a hot tub for a while is also a luxury I look forward to while on vacation. So either give yourself some extra time for a nice long shower or soak in your bathtub with some bath salts. I’ve also been taking more time for my skincare routine and have added in some new tools, like this one, to help keep my pores clean and small.
• Let go of your to-do list. This is easier said then done, especially with what’s going on around the world but when I’m on vacation I let my daily thoughts and worries drift away and focus on the present moments with my friends and family. Yes, we’re all still working while at home so this last one might be best left for the weekends, but make sure to take some time to tune out the noise and stay present. This could mean tucking your laptop out of sight. Turning your phones to silent or sleep mode, or having a screen free day. I’ve been adding in meditation and yoga to help me unwind and clear my head.
What do you think about these easy ways to elevate your day and feel more luxurious, just like they would be if you were enjoying a staycation outside of your home?
As always, thank you so much for stopping by the blog today!
