It’s been a while since I’ve given you all a fitness update and I figured it was about time. I’ve been putting it off because honestly my progress isn’t as far along as I would have hoped. And it’s never easy to share progress when the progress isn’t there. But in the interest of being transparent with you and keeping it real (like I always do) I felt I should share as I’m sure I’m not alone and the struggle is real.
As you might remember, I had wrist surgery this summer. Recovery from that took longer than I thought it would and if I’m completely honest that really set me back quite far. But the alternative was dealing with pain ALL THE TIME. Which isn’t really an alternative I was willing to consider. I took about 8 weeks to heal after surgery. And I barely did anything physical except for walks with Mason. That combined with having just stopped breastfeeding, a month or so before, I think is what really did me in. I felt like all the hard work I had put in the past year was all about reversed! That’s right, after 8 weeks everything that had started to strengthen and firm up was gone. It’s insane how easy it is to gain but how hard it is to shed off.
I eased into working out after surgery and started off doing 4 weeks of BBG beginner training. I’ve never done her beginner training before since when I started BBG (the first time) I had already been working out consistently. But, seeing as my wrist was weak I thought it best to do before jumping back into BBG training. I finished the four weeks without much wrist pain at all. I did rely on my wrist brace to help support my wrist especially during burpees but that really helped and clearly wrist surgery was the right thing to do.
Now I’m currently on week 8 of BBG training and it’s doing great. I feel great after my workouts, I power through them thanks to my Pandora workout playlist, and I’m always dripping in sweat. It feels nice to have my routine back. With Mason now in preschool I set the mornings aside (Monday, Wednesday, and Friday) after dropping him off to do my BBG workouts.
It’s getting chilly in the mornings so on my days off (Tuesday and Thursday) I’m not on my bike anymore. Instead I try and get afternoon walks in with Mason, pushing him in his stroller. If I do my walks into Capitola Village then I’m getting just shy of 3 miles round trip. We usually stop in the Village and I let Mason get out of his stroller to run around on the beach or at a nearby park on the walk home. Pushing a 26 lb. kid up a hill in a stroller is no joke so I definitely feel like I’m getting a good workout in without raising my heart rate too much to count towards my LISS (low intensity steady state) workouts for the week.
So there you have it, right now I’m sticking to BBG because the workouts fit great with my schedule and I’ve been able to stay motivated to do them. I’ve never really struggled with self-motivation, which you definitely need to have in my opinion to be successful with BBG. I know I can’t compare my progress to others, since everyone is different, but my hope is that by week 12 the skin on my stomach will be firmer as it still feels sooooo loose to me.
I’d love to know what you’ve been struggling with lately and if/how I can help or better yet, I’d love to hear your wins!! Let me know in the comments below 🙂
